A bit off good news in the mainstream music world: Odd Future’s Frank Ocean nabbed two Grammy awards last night, one for Best Urban Contemporary Album, and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (with Jay-Z and Kanye West). Needless to say, I had high hopes for Channel Orange taking album of the year.
I was expecting Ocean to swagger up to the stage, flanked by his Odd Future crew in a move that would have been pretty historic, if the Grammy Awards had any guts at all. Still, though, it was pretty cool seeing Earl Sweartshirt and Tyler the Creator sitting in the audience, most likely talking more shit than anyone in the Staples Center. The only thing that could’ve made the ceremonies better would have been another fist fight with Chris Brown, who, might I add, looked like quite the disturbed woman beater. Congrats, Rihanna. You’ve made such a good life decision.
